US to defend Japanese islands claimed by China

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, in his first telephone conversation with his Japanese counterpart, reaffirmed America’s commitment to protecting a group of islands in the East China Sea claimed by Japan and China, the Pentagon said..
In a conversation with Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi, Austin confirmed that Article 5 of the US-Japan Security Treaty, which provides for US defense obligations to Japan, applies to the aforementioned uninhabited islands, the Pentagon said in a statement..
