«Gazprom» has not yet resumed construction, as the Norwegian company DNV GL was unable to inspect the vessel «Academician Chersky» and its equipment.
«Gazprom» to find another company.
DNV GL was attracted by the company – the owner of the pipeline to check its safety and technical integrity.
Upon completion of the construction, the company had to issue a certificate of conformity.
One of the tasks of the certifying company was to monitor vessels with equipment serving the project. And it is precisely this activity, according to the explanations of the US State Department, that may fall under the sanctions provided for by the recently adopted Act on the Protection of Europe’s Energy Security by Congress..
«Therefore DNV GL has terminated the provision of services that may be subject to the law», – stated in the company.
According to American law, companies providing various services to ships laying a gas pipeline may fall under the sanctions..
Pipe-laying work has now been suspended and no sanctions have been imposed on anyone yet. – however, their very threat leads to a discussion of whether the completion of the project is in principle possible.
«Nord Stream 2» can hire any other certification company, but it will also face sanctions.
Gas pipeline construction «Nord Stream 2» was suspended almost a year ago – after the US foreseen the possibility of sanctions against ships laying pipes.
«Gazprom» and its European partners continue to declare that the pipeline will be completed. However, the timing of the resumption of work is still unclear..
USA opposes completion «Nord Stream – 2», believing that the project will increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas, which will create political risks.
